What is a strategic plan?

Key components of a strategic plan

Types of strategic plans

  • Corporate strategic plans: These address the entire organization's direction and typically span from annual planning sessions to every few years. Use this when setting company-wide priorities or entering new markets.

  • Departmental strategic plans: These focus on specific functional areas, such as marketing, operations, or product development. These plans align departmental goals with broader corporate objectives while addressing unique challenges within each function.

  • Operational strategic plans: These concentrate on improving internal processes and efficiency. They're valuable when organizations need to scale operations or reduce costs while maintaining quality.

  • Growth strategic plans: These target expansion opportunities, whether through new products, markets, or acquisitions. These plans require careful market analysis and risk assessment to succeed.
